A Dipper Not Included in the Kit

Post by Ranch Dog »

There is a Lee dipper that is not included in the Powder Measure Kit. It is a .17 dipper (#PM1829) and is part of the 25 ACP Carbide Three Die Set. It is different than the other dippers in that it is the .7cc dipper with a "aluminum can" pressed into the dipper.

The bottom of the dipper is drilled out and there is airspace between the bottom of the dipper and the base of the "aluminum can". This empty space can create havoc on powder drops in that as you move the dipper through powder for the pickup, the base of the dipper fills with powder as well. As you dispense the powder, it falls out of the base.

What I suggest is filling the base with something like JB Weld or may be even hot glue. Anything that will not cause powder to stick to it.

I guess I have that to eventually look forward to once I start loading .25 ACP for a Baby Browning. I wonder why they dish out the bottom though. Save that extra one cent of plastic? It seems very counter productive.

I think the hole is punched or drilled out and has something to do with relieving the pressure trapped inside the "aluminum can" as it is seated in the cup.

It also could be to prevent using the dipper if the aluminum can falls out and gets lost. With a hole in the bottom you won't measure much. That could prevent a mistake.

I can see why they don't include it as it must cost more to make and anyone doing 25 acp would have one already.

Just gotta love those tiny dippers!
Great idea on the JB Weld as a filler.

Might be worth getting one of these die sets just for that dipper ;-)

What can I say... I'm a collector soul, that's something I've got from my grandfather.

The through hole is prolly just for ease of manufacture. What charges of what powder does it "dip"?
