Big Time Texas Hunts Lottery

Post by Ranch Dog »

Don't know how many of you participate in the Big Time Texas Hunts Lottery but the winner of the Ultimate Mule Deer Hunt, Stephen Knowles of Austin, just completed his hunt on the Yoakum Dunes Wildlife Management Area. The WMA is a new 14,000 acre unit near Lubbock. This was Mr. Knowles first mule deer hunt and he did real good!

This area of Texas, west of Lubbock along the New Mexico border is really blossoming for mule deer as late. Here is a picture of a private land buck taken this season from near the same area.

Now those are some deer with some meat on them. A lot of the little whitetails they have in this area look more like goats to me. I've only seen one really good buck. Of course, I was cleaning out my shed at the time and he came around the corner and we met face to face about 3 feet apart.

Needless to say, I was NOT at all aggressive. I backed away and around the corner of the barn. As soon as I was out of sight, he took the opportunity to high tail it across the field that was behind the house I lived in then.
