Another quick range day

Post by RBHarter »

I have the good fortune of having a 308 to shoot that is not to picky about loads ,so long as the bullets are under 175 gr that is . I know it's length of the bullet as opposed to the actual weight and sometimes that can be overcome with velocity. I have a NOE copy of the Lyman NRA paper patched long range bullet 301618 at 172 gr. Rather than the very hard bullets used by the NRA to hit the high velocity needed for the 1000yd shooting with the 300WM ,I have used a 75/25 WW-1-20 alloy because 1st everything I have should be hunted and 2nd others have had better success with softer bullets in smaller cases. I have worked other loads and efforts and have a bit of a handle on what should work. With that in mind the note below are my direct notes.

3006 50 gr 4831 H
301618 NOE 172 gr 2 wraps GB printer paper
1903A3 Rem 11-43 Bubba stock milstd everything. 1-10 2 groove .
4" group in the berm high right ..... move sight down to 100 yd from 450.
2650 fps

Savage 110E 308
45 gr 4831H 301618
3-9 x40 Bushnell sport view. 1-12 6 Right .
2 inch group , 5" low 20 clicks up .
2400 fps

M 14 REM
PB 323-175 2R
35 gr 4350 IMR
Lyman peep blade bead.
1700 fps
6" group , 5 " left .

With the sight adjustments made I have to of course reshoot the groups tomorrow to be sure of the loads and be sure that the target cast bullet will open some and not just "pencil" through . I have a pending hog hunt just 13 days away,I have to have 5 rifles ready for it as my daughter and son in law are going and my daughter sent her guns home when California got all stupider. Anyway the 32 was proven out about 3 years ago but something in the formula has changed and the loads at start levels for jackets are only just a little faster with cast. This begs me to question if I read the scale correctly . If maybe I had loaded 37 gr not 32 gr of 4350 . There is the issue of it fitting in the case even if the pressures didn't go crazy which there is little risk of with 4350 in a 30-30 class case and a cast bullet.

Any way I have to peen the front sight on the M14 Rem as it moved easily and may be the poor group source . I should mention also that this is the 1915-1935 Remington pump rifle with the fluted magazine tube and not a modified 1955-1972 gas auto rifle by Springfield.

The 03 had been to a fun shoot with 400 yd steel and due to poor performance had had the rear sight moved up to 475 yd marks to hit 200 yd steel I learned after that that the 03 by design requires stock tip pressure to shoot well...... I guess hacksaw Bubba didn't know that either . It shoots much better now but with the sight still at the 475 marks was hitting 16" high at the about 60 yd target in the gravel pit.

The 308 was last sighted for a 165 gr BT at 300 for a zero hold from the Herters/S&B ammo line as a backup rifle ,it's little wonder that the PO I was off with a so very different load.

My expected ranges on the hog shoot are not over 60 yd so loose groups here except the 32 are not of a real concern to me . I killed 3 last year with the 45 Colts 92' carbine so I feel like the 06 and 308 are a little excessive but since we can't argue the degree of dead I guess they will do.

Couple of questions. I know you paper patched but What is GB printer paper. Second what did you size your bullet to before PP? And how thick is the paper you use, okay so I asked 3, lol.

I want to try paper patching but the smallest sizer from Lee is 308 and to get to .311 I need some thin stock I think.

The 301618 drops from my mould just over .301 I have a push through sizer at very close to exactly 301. The GB is for Green Bar ,it is the old style chain matrix printer paper. I have the good fortune of having a friend with a pallet of it . It is a clean tough paper . I would refer you to the smokeless paper patching forum on castboolits for instruction. The follow up with the 308 didn't go well. Due to time constraints I will have to save that for another day. I think that probably the 03A3 will also not make this trip . The flyer wouldn't bother me if it were an inch out but during the follow up it was off the paper. This points to a problem with me or the process. Most likely me I have either developed a flinch or s huge selection of bad form points have dropped into my shooting. Being rushed may be the biggest problem.

I've read that section quite a bit but it has been a while so need to head back and ask some questions. My Lee C309-180-R drops at .314 with COWW and 2% tin. I may have to bit the bullet and buy a new mold.

You can hit the NOE forum for a look I saw a post suggesting another run of the 301618 . They cut them 301 and 303 in 172 and 212 gr . They were bought out in about 6 weeks all but maybe 3-4 moulds . Buckshot recently turned new die blanks for his push through sizers $25 +$6 shipping 8 or so will fit in a small FRB For the $6 .
