I went ahead and "shade tree" recrowned it with my large brass pan head screw chucked up in a drill with JB Bore Paste. Now it looks good. I've done this with several old rifles and it has always helped.

Use the same on some military surplus rifles although I make up my own paste with grease and 600 grit lapping powder. In one case I followed up with a few strokes of a lead lap when the crown failed the cotton swab test. In another I had to give up and get the barrel recrowned with a target crown. Old guns are like old trucks, tinkering is half the fun

With the 308 Win. I probably use the powder with the 300 Sav but don't have any records remaining from that rifle, it left the ranch 10 to 12 years ago.

Kind of off topic but y'all got me worried about the 77gr 5.56 I loaded a couple weeks ago. Pretty sure the BT is below the neck by eyeballing.

Seems to me every gun is special since I hate to sell one. Nice clean rifle and the K4 looks good on it. Picture of lapping the crown is great. Will help many get the idea.

Another method for a simple crown clean up. I have used the brass round head screw/valve grinding compound. But recently read on another forum (can't remember - on too many - if that is possible!) of another method. Using a glass marble and valve grinding compound. Yet to try it.

Okay, the madness has ended for a bit. I've been poking around and ended up buying a 99 chambered in 300 Savage from Williams Gun Sight Co.



I've bought firearms from them before and it has been a pleasant experience. You to talk to a very knowledgeable person, a gunsmith if you like, and they fully describe the firearm to you in detail while they look it over. They had two available and I've been pondering one. I looked again today and only the one I been favoring remained so I decided to get with the purchase. It comes with a Weaver K3 which has become a hard find as well.

The lines of the 99 say rifle to me even though I have mostly bolt action rifles. Thanks for posting the picture.
