Old Head Stamps

Post by Steve »

Came across some ammo I loaded in the 70s. The cases stamped FA 4 17 are loaded with 150 gr Lee gas checked bullets I made with a 1 cavity mold. (hand loaded with a lee loader)

The cases stamped Sears are from a few boxes I bought with the model 53 Ted Williams rifle, they are hand loaded with GI bullets. I have 5 of each stuck in a Federal plastic cartridge holder.

I used to shoot them in the High Power matches at a local gun club.

Greetings
Oldest 06 cases I have reloaded were some from FA 37. Worked fine.
Have read the mercuric priming tended to make the brass brittle. I recon it was a matter how many times it had been reloaded or cared for after firing.

When I started shooting those FA 4 17 cases I believe I had a couple hundred. They didn't last for many firings, I didn't know about annealing brass back then. I have about a dozen left. Just going to set them up to look at.

I've been using some really old 300 Savage brass stamped Dominion & Savage. This Dominion could be anywhere from 1948 through 1966.

Then the really cool one, this Savage headstamp runs from 1917 through 1926!

It has all worked very well. Actually, since looking at the dates I've eased up on the small lots for this that I have but I do have about four cycles on it. I did have some problems with one of them, I would have to look which, but it was with some pretty hot loads.

Thanks RD for that photo of the S.A. Corp 300 Savage. I have never seen one of them.

Me too. After looking them up I felt kind of bad using them.

Thanks for posting these guys. Makes me want to go look through my brass and see what I find laying around in the bins. I think the oldest I have is Korean War surplus 30.06, but I have a .50 caliber can full of 20 round cardboard boxes of that ammo. I'm torn between using it and pulling it down. I only have two milsurp bolt actions for 30.06 now - a M1917 with a new barrel and a M1903A3 Remington with a like new barrel. I'm pretty sure I sold my 30.06 Mauser I got from somewhere.

I went and shot the 325 yesterday. I had about 5 boxes of old stock Win and 16 of whatever. Funny there were 3 SA 30-30 s it seems appropriate to set them aside as OM for the rifle .
Look at me I'm a collector....... :)
