Re: Time to polish brass on the Henry.
The brass frame will soon gain patina again, no matter what you do.
I decided to let my 66 age in dignity. It's nearly three years old now, and starts to look pretty again. It's just the time between the first spots and the all over patina that looks strange. Shooting black powder helps a lot.
I know it doesn't really answer your question...

I like the looks of some patina. This just has some that looks like crap. And I enjoy wiping my guns down, this will just take a little longer. I have got a Godagrip cheek piece ordered for it so I can get on the sites faster with a good cheek weld.Fyodor wrote:The brass frame will soon gain patina again, no matter what you do.

Re: Time to polish brass on the Henry.
We use Simichrome for most of our metal polishing at the Air Force Academy.
I don't know about it removing bluing as I never ever dared to use metal polish on my Garand drill rifle.
Other's have suggested Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish.
Please keep us posted...

Never dull is a cotton wadding wax fortified polish in a can we used a lot for horns and cymbals 35 yr ago in marching band. Simi chrome we used on propellers daily exposure to sun and basically distilled water rain it would go 8-9 months before you'd start to really see a need to polish again .
I used Nevrdull on some cases in 6 months even ambiant bagged the shine was dull in 18 months they looked the same as the other 3 yr old prep brass .

Re: Time to polish brass on the Henry.
I've used a wax before to keep the brass gun parts looking nice longer. Some swear by Johnson's paste wax, but I use Renaissance wax, the same stuff the NRA museum uses.
Way back in the 1980's, I was responsible for keeping a good selection of firearms from Navy Arms and Shiloh Sharps in good condition, plus some black powder revolvers from Colt. The wax made a big difference in keeping oxidation at bay. We also kept a silicone cloth around and every time a customer handled a gun, it would be wiped down before it went back in the rack. Some people's skin oil is highly corrosive, I discovered back then.

Re: Time to polish brass on the Henry.
My local Ace Hardware had Never-Dull, so I got a can of it to give it a try. I cleaned the barrel strap with it last night. It shined up nice without a lot of effort so I will just use the Never-Dull for the entire project.
There has probably been 500 rounds through it since I cleaned the action good. Have to get rid of all that fouling and some oil so I can polish it. The action was still working very smooth.

Re: Time to polish brass on the Henry.
The downside of neverdull is the wadding dries out over time Still great metal polish when fresh though. I used it for years. I now use blue magic metal polish in a jar any autoparts store sells it and use old socks and t shirts it works very well. Either will get the job done.
