Outdoor shooting range in Germany

Post by Fyodor »

Hi guys,

On the past weekend I competed in the regional championships of my shooting association. I took that opportunity to not only shoot a lot of guns, but also shoot a short video to show you how our ranges look like.

The bay seen in the video was unused during that competition, so it was completely empty. This range is about the best there is in Germany for shooters who like dynamic shooting or just recreational plinking. It is very unusual, because it has nearly 360° backstop and a bulletproof floor, too.

If I just showed you still images, most probably you wouldn't believe this is an outdoor shooting range at all. But because of safety and noise regulations in Germany, shooting outdoors means you get wet during rain, but you won't see the sky.

But enough chatter, here's the video:

This is the range, the best there is in Germany:

Wow that is interesting and different. 360 degrees of indoor shooting. :o :D The place looks like it could stand a bomb blast.

So you can't go to a friends ranch, farm or country acreage and shoot?

That's impressive, but I would miss the connection with the outdoors that I'm used to. What is the maximum distance you can shoot? The Earth view is even more impressive. It is in a forest, but from the video, I thought it would be an urban setting.

On this range there are quite a few 100 m lanes and even several 300 m lanes. That's very uncommon in Germany, and I know of only one place where you can shoot 600 m. I don't know about any longer ranges (except military, where civilians aren't permitted).

This range also has been a military training range, but was abandoned and got rescued by the BDS sports shooting association. It is now maybe the best known shooting range in Germany (except the Olympic target ranges in Munich) because of it's versatility. This compound is unique as far as I know. Regional matches from all over Germany are held here, even if the shooters have to drive three to four hours to get there.

Only disadvantage is the canteen, which is very basic and only opens occationally, but you can never know when in advance.

No. To discharge a gun you need a "shooting permit" in Germany.

Only exception is on a state approved shooting range. Or when the projectile you projected has less than 7 Joules of muzzle energy AND under no circumstance can leave your property AND nobody else feels threatened. Which means you can shoot with airguns in your basement, that's it. Only a few have a backyard large enough to shoot with their BB guns there, and using firearms (including .22lr) on private property is virtually impossible.

Thanks for sharing Fyodor...

Sometimes we forget how blessed we are here in the USA!
As impressive as the structures are, they feel cold and not much welcoming.
I don't mean to bring things down but it has kind of feeling of a bunker or prison yard.

I love my small range with just grass, trees, light breeze. Yes we have a shooting building but about half of the shooting is done standing outside, in the sun and breeze...

The rectangular field is pistol/rifle range 50/100/200 yds and the rectangular field with cement half-circle is for shotgun/skit shooting.

And, as an added bonus, aim high and you may get 'a-hole-in-one' on the golf course 1 mile down range :)

Nice! It nice to see someone else enjoying a Swiss Schmidt Rubin K31 as much as I do mine. :D
