German and European Chamionships CAS are over

Post by Fyodor »

Hi guys,

during the last two weeks I attended the German Championship in Philippsburg (DE) and the European Championship in Oparany (CZ) in Cowboy Action and Wild Bunch shooting.

First week on the GC was great, had a lot of fun, and scored well. (WB: 12/40 in my category, 25/84 over all; CAS: 5/15 category, 101/242 over all).

But the real blast (positive and negative) was the EC in Oparany. With the training from GC, I scored 13/33 in my category in Wild Bunch, but against far better shooters than in Germany. I even won one stage, which is really great, my first time I managed to do that. In the CAS Main Match unfortunately I got my first Stage Disqualification ever, on the first day, on the first stage. Stupid mistake... it was "only" a stage DQ, so I could go on with the match, but I lost about 90 places. The rest of the match went really fast, smooth and fun... except that time on the last stage of the first day, when I nearly had a kaboom happening to my revolver. The blackpowder residue built up so largely, that the bullet went into the barrel only about 1 inch, and then stopped. I had a huge fireball all around me, when the gasses vented off the cylinder gap. It took me four hours to destroy one table, one cleaning rod and a hammer (!) until I finally got the bullet out. Nothing happened to me or the revolver, though.

I'll try to upload a few interesting pictures and videos and link them here, if yo are interested.

Oh, and during the EC we skipped all of Friday, and squeezed all of it into Saturday, because we had slightly increased humidity all day. But please have a look for yourself:

I don't do cowboy action competitions but it sounds like you had a lot of fun. I do shoot traditional BP rifle competition.
Let's see some more pictures of your shoots.

All videos are raw and uncut. There's quite a lot going on after actual shooting, that's not so interesting.

One stage from the German Championship, .44-40 Blackpowder, gunfighter style. A pair of Schofield revolvers, Uberti 1873 short rifle and Sauer&Sohn hammered side by side made in 1914/18:

One stage from European Championship, .38spl Blackpowder, cross draw style. Pietta SAA revolvers, Uberti 1866 carbine and hammerless Boito shotgun:

One stage from EC in Wild Bunch. Norinco 1897 Trench gun (I also have an original bayonet, but don't fit it while shooting), above 1873 short rifle and Norinco 1911A1:

I've tried GOEX once, but it's hard to get here. Usually I use WANO, because that's the best available brand and relatively cheap. Swiss is too expensive to burn it like that. Apart from that, it pretty much doesn't matter for cowboy action, high or consistent precision are not necessary. For a while I used a Czech powder that was even cheaper than WANO, but leaves a huge amount of residue. Regarding that issue, I should switch to Swiss, but 50 $/lbs (90 €/kg) is a bit too much for me. One larger match is easily two pounds of powder.
