Post by Steve »

Today I told a fellow I would help him sight in the 243 Win he is going to take on a hog hunt in Texas. I would apreciate a recomendation on bullet type and weight and type. I may load some for him if I can get the componets.

Thanks,

I would use a bullet that is fairly heavy for cartridge/caliber and that has an exposed lead core. The first that comes to mind is Federal Fusion as it is a very well constructed bullet. I used ammoseek.com to see if anyone actually has any for sale and it spit out this source: Raleigh Tactical Supply & Sport

Nice site RD just didn't like it when I clicked on a link they trapped me and made me prove that is what I wanted to do. The site is easier to use than http://gunbot.net/reloading/Powder/

Depends on the hunt I recently did a Tx hog hunt , the 140# hog my GF took w a 222 and Federal blue box 50gr SP did a great job at 46yd but so did a 45 Colts in 16'' carbine. In 243 specifically, I didn't care for the 100gr Serria Game King on mule deer so I won't recomend that 1. I think that a 85-90 gr SP will be fine . A friend shot a 90# hog 2 yr ago w/a Reminton 95gr(?) Corelokt (Remington green box) at 60yds as I recall and had a hog in a heap. Both were in the same Savage 99 made about 1975.

On our hunt 60yd was a long shot , number 1 and 4 were shot at 17yd and feet . My limited expirence w/the dozen hogs taken by our group is that they aren't all that tough to kill, except they have proportionaly huge shoulder joints so if you're going to boiler house them take the quartering away shot or center of the chest. The best option for kill only is to disrupt the brain pan or the spine brain connection.

I talked with the fellow that is going hunting a little while ago. He told me he bought 3 boxes of 100 gr expanding bullets. Thjat is all the info he could give me. I will let you know how things go. He said he does not plan on shooting over 100 yards.
