Building A New Rifle
Building A New Rifle
OK I did it
Today I purchased a new Remington 700 short action and bolt.
Kind of pricy but will be the last rifle I ever buy or build.
Want your advice as to which barrel maker to use.
Want to make it in 6.5 Creedmoor
Only barrel maker I found with a creedmoor barrel was Shilen but am still looking.
What do you figure is too pricy for a complete build?

Re: Building A New Rifle
I just choked down 486 bucks for a some assembly required AR .
I built a wildcat. ....mild cat on a Carcano about 3 yr ago under $300.
My expected total in a 358 Win Mauser is about $300.
I will qualify the above with having made some extraordinarily good buys and having swapped goods and services for finished products and even outright wrong take it and run deals.
Realistically to have a $1000 in a great rifle isn't unreasonable today . Sheilen, Hart and Douglas get $400 for a bbl a trigger can be upwards of $150 ,bottom metal I've seen at $2-400 , a mill blank is 60-100 ,start looking at AA and now you're at 250. Add what is considered good optics and now your in it 2 grand.
It's really how much you want to spend .
I got the last Santa Barbara 98' action no trigger or safety and 2 late 60s stocks partially inleted for $75 the bbl was fitted by an associate that gifted me the bbl which was a $300 Douglas gunsmith bbl twice cut with 200 cast bullets down it . I gave $80 for the bottom metal.

Re: Building A New Rifle
Shilen match grade barrels are great. Cost of a custom build goes as far as you need it to perform. Now saying that optics and stock she sits in is very important, also if your going for every ounce of accuracy possible you need to get the action blue printed and bolt trued. Its more money but it all adds to tack driver. These were the the main points of need other than glass bedding the stock to the action n barrel channel free floating. Be sure to do a chamber cast ad barrel cast once your action n barrel are together be sure all is in spec. before you go further into it.
Re: Building A New Rifle
Bought the shilen barrel and it is on the way to be fitted and chambered on the receiver.
All of the other parts sans scope have been ordered.
5 month wait for the Macmillian stock but am not in any hurry.
Am looking at the Leupold 8.5x20x50 side focus scope but haven't decided yet.
All this to hit a target at 900 yards , the silly (stupid) things some people do for fun!!

Re: Building A New Rifle
Today bought a Leupold MK4 6x20x50 mil dot /crosshair scope from a friend.
Wants to go Nightforce and sold it to me for half price.
Only on his gun 1 year and maybe 100 rounds so like new.
It is coming together slowly and maybe I will get to shoot it for Christmas.

Re: Building A New Rifle
Ordered a Mac Millian varmit stock today.
Talked to the nice lady at Mac Millian and they have a 5 1/2 months waiting list for them.
Told me they are running full bore and cannot keep up with the orders.
OH well it makes the wait for the rifle sweeter.
Maybe I will get it by Christmas!!

Re: Building A New Rifle
beekeeper,
remember when we were very young and if someone told us we needed to wait half a year, it sounded like an eternity. Then at "middle age", the whole half a year thing was almost laughable. But at what point beyond entering "middle age" does the half year wait begin to seem like "not worth the risk"? I'm only 62 (in three weeks or so), but I'm beginning to get itchy about anything over a couple weeks wait for anything
