Last week I did 450 rounds of real cowboy loads: .44-40, loaded with 37 gr of FFg.

Today I'll need to do about 300 .38spl for a friend.

What press are you using loading that large of an amount of 44/40?

My trusty pro1000.

Actually the 44-40 is the fastest caliber to load for me, even if I have to place every case by hand, because the case feeding tubes are just a hair too narrow for that cartridge. But the cases sit in the shellplate very solid, because of the slight shoulder the powder doesn't spill on indexing, and the large bullets are very "unfumbly" to place.

It took me about 2 1/2 hours to load these 450 rounds, including mounting the correct press to my bench, fetching bullets, primers, powder, rechecking die setup (I do that on every session, even if the dies are permanently mounted to the turret), checking every primer for seating depth, placing the rounds into ammo boxes, and stowing/cleanup. In 44-40 I can easily and without hazzle make 200 rounds per hour. In other calibers, even on the same press, I can make only 150.

Do you have any problems obtaining the 44/40 brass?

Well, I got quite a lot of CBC (MagTech) brass, but that's not ideal for reloading. Some time ago we bought a whole lot of straline brass in our club, but I ended up taking most of it. So I got 1500 cases of good starline hulls to use. That should be OK for a few years, but it is quite hard to come by that stuff over here. They are about 50 ct per case, if you can get them at all. The large 500 packs have completely vanished from the shops, now you only get them in bags of 100, and only one or two bags at a time.
