Farmerj I guess I've been lucky and what you say is valid. I do wear polycarbonate glasses when I reload. I've only had one primer detonation. That occurred while depriming with a whack-a-mole using a shell holder instead of the collet. It sent the cracked cap and the shell holder flying to the ceiling and left a stain in my undies. :o It took a week to find the shell holder. On the up side the search for the shell holder force me to clean up the shop. ;)

I also use batting gloves for some ops. Haven't padded my RCBS hand primer (very old one) but was thinking about it the other day. Might look at some of these sheets.

I'm trying to understand the mechanism that got a wac a mole to set off the primer. So far it would seem the wac was to hard that it drove the anvil into the compound and set it off . Glad nothing was seriously damaged.

The hammer was modified by using a shell holder instead of the collet. That's part of why it blew up.

Okay. maybe, but nothing on the shell holder assuming it was a normal shell holder should have been in contact with the primer. I have used the Lee shell holders for the priming tool (wont go on press ram) without problem. Usually when the collets for the wac-a-mole have gone walk about.

Well I was using either a #16 RCBS or a #19 Lee shell holder and it did happen in an RCBS impact bullet puller hammer (aka whack a mole). At the time I was disassembling about 20 9mmL cartridges. Using shellholders was my preferred method because I didn't have to fiddle with the collet. After that incident I discovered the Quenitics collet which made the whole process MUCH simpler and IMO safer.

Did I do something wrong or is there a Murphy's Law using that method? I don't care either way. If it is possible for me to screw something up or if the law of Murphy occurrs after repetition I try to find a better safer way.

Back on topic the tennis racket tape arrives today and the continuation of my education resumes. ;)
