If you don't run your press like in a hurry, knocking out live primers is no issue. They are sensitive to sharp hit, not to slow push. You migth crumble the primer compound, so I wouldn't reccommend reusing them for competition rounds, but usually they still work fine.

Most of my salvage of primers for a few years has been when I am ready to put the bullet on. I find the cases either split when they resized or some other case mouth damage.

I dump the powder back, set the case on a case holder and decap with a plastic mallet and decapping pin. I should, but I will be honest I don't treat them very softly or slowly. I put them back for the next time I am priming. They have all worked.

Sure, have done it innumerable times. However, when doing so, I use a Lee Universal Decapping die, and importantly, I use a subtle but steady pressure on the ram for safety. No quick or hard motions...

Plus for an old retired fart like me it give me something to do and keeps me outta trouble, sometimes.
