I lived there in the early '90s. Stationed in Monterey. And that was the basic thought process way back then. It really IS two separate entities and politics. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea, especially for NorCal

An earthquake-THE BIG ONE-would settle the west coast dispute. Maybe then Calif, Ore and Wash would fall into the ocean. The EPA would be concerned though. The Pacific would be polluted from all the unwashed Berkeley types that were washed away
