We try !

4 kids and loading duty sounds familiar to me .
Steel shot pushed duck hunting nearly out of my reach at the time and the sorry performance of the factory ammo , 5 rounds of BB into a 35 yd Honker when just a couple of seasons before I had dropped snows dead with 3s out past 50 yd , was more than I could bear . I was given my Grandfather's Pacific single stage when he passed away just about the same time . All of sudden I had 1 1/8 oz loads that killed honkers stone dead at 40+ yd with 1s for about $35/100 instead of $14-18/box .

I have four kids at home too. Should I take up shot loading?

You get a yes vote from me.
The "in thing" now is loading 3/4 oz 12 or 20 ga loads, little recoil, breaks clays just as good as 1oz loads.
Plus save $ on shot, easy for younger folks to learn about reloading.
The Lee Load Alls don't come with a 3/4 oz shot bushing so all that's needed to do is line a 1 oz bushing about 3/4 way around with the plastic from a 12 ga shell, that's what I do.

I even had an MEC for a while. Flipped it. I can count on one hand how many times I've pulled the trigger on a shotgun.
