Thanks RD. Great pictures. I envy your game availability. Up here it is everything is by draw and we have only moose, caribou and bear. Based on your report I may give the 7.62x39 another look for a bolt gun.

With those three critters, I would go with my 308 Win over the 7.62x39.

At one time just about everyone here used either a 30-30 or a .303 Brit. The 30-30 170 Silvertips have probably killed more local moose and caribou over the years than any other round. My big game rifles are a Remington 760 in 35 Rem, Parker Hale 1100 in 30-06 and a Sav 99 in 308. The 7.62x39 would just be a paper puncher. With regards to bear, I don't hunt them as just too much effort required after they are down.

That is where the 30-30 Win shines over the 7.62x39, heavy bullets, although I can duplicate the performance with my 165-grain bullet in the Savage Scout. I'm a fan of the 303 British, love it with heavy bullets.
