Lost my buddy

I lost my buddy last weekend. My pal of 13 plus years died last weekend after a short time suffering with a respiratory infection. She was 14 1/2 years old and just couldn't cope with the intense smoke we experienced due to the wildfires in the area.
Brandy was a German wirehair Ridgeback cross and the best companion a guy could want. Always wanting to please and ready to get her red ball and play.
I've had a few good dogs in my life but Brandy I really miss. Guess I am just an old softy.

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss, I know it hurts, and have been bracing for the loss of my dog.

My Red Heeler, Millie, is running out of steam with lumbosacral disease of her back/pelvis since the hurricane at the front of the month. Twice, I thought she had reached her end but the drugs killed the pain so he can relax a couple of days and then get back on her feet.

That is for sure a sad day. Most of us have been there, done that, more than once. I know my wife and I have in our 45 years together. Currently we're with our 14 year old Doberman that's slowing down way too fast. Guinness, my sissy guard dog, has once again become my favorite companion and is most certainly on that "short leash". I'm already preparing.

Old Scribe, you certainly have my most sincere condolences.

That really sucks. I've only had one dog. When I was still living at home, Dad was working 80 hours a week for IBM so I was the "man of the house" too early for some tasks. When Dixie, our German Shepard mix got really sick and Dad was working I had to lift her out of her house (Dad and I built it with a hinged roof) wrapped in towels and put her in the car to be taken to the vet to be put down. Mom asked me if I wanted to go with her and my sister. I said no, I did my part. I'll never forget that. She was part of the family as they all get to be.

There's nothing odd about feeling a loss. You'll feel better later when only the good memories remain.

Lost my 2 best friends (except for wife), Jack Russells. I felt when each one went that it was the worst days of my life. I still feel the loss, 12 and 8 years later.
My condolences.

The Last Moments

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
