Savage 10 FCM Scout 7.62x39

Post by Ranch Dog »

My new rifle is up and running and I will get started with this intriguing, to me, little cartridge this week. I also have a Rossi Single Shot chambered in this cartridge. I will get some pictures up of it as soon as I complete the stock refinish this week.

What do you plan on doing with the stock? What weight bullets are you thinking of?
I shot my first buck (the one in the picture of my reloading bench) with an SKS in 7.62x39. I ended up selling it when people were paying Obama scare prices. Now that I cast my own bullets I coulda made a semi-auto 30-30!

My comments about the stock was that belonging to the Rossi. I'm applying a Tru-Oil finish.

Cast bullets. My TLC311-165-RF until I can have a bullet of my design cut. That looks to be a TLC313-125-RF. That is a bullet I've come up with that should serve the needs of both the .308 & .310 groove rifles.

The weight is appropriate for the cartridge, the bullet body does not extend beyond the case neck, and there is a 72% meplat for killing authority.

Have you slugged the barrel yet? Just curious if they'd do it to .308" like I've heard Ruger does with there mini-30. Do you like the accutrigger? I love mine.

The Savage is a .308 groove. The information I have concerning the Rugers are that their 7.62x39s, the Mini and M77, are .311 groove.
Ruger Mini-30 bore specs
This rifle is chambered for the 7.62x39mm cartridge. This cartridge, traditionally, uses a projectile with a nominal diameter of .311 to .312 inch.

At the time the Mini-30 was introduced very few bullet makers were producing .311/.312 inch bullets for reloading in the light 125-130 grain weight required. Ruger initiated the use of barrels with a groove dimension of .308 inch and a long tapered throat. The throat allowed the use of ammunition with .311/.312 projectiles by gradually squeezing them to the .308 diameter. In addition, ammunition loaded with more commonly available .308 diameter bullets could also be used.

Commencing in 1992 Ruger initiated a change to using .311/.312 nominal groove diameter, 1-10 inch right hand twist barrels in all Mini-30's. It was likely well into 1993 before all rifles coming of the production line incorporated the .311/.312 barrels.
Can you add more are different info Cyrus?

I have not shot the rifle yet but the trigger feels great. I was a little concerned about bringing the rifle in, sight unseen, as I could not find one within a reasonable distance. My concern was paying a premium against their base rifles, the rifles that I can find locally, such as the Axis and Hog Hunter. All of these are nice looking rifles at a great but I worried that the FCM would be worth the additional money. After looking over it with a fine tooth comb, I would have to answer "yes, it is".

It has been a lot of years since I've bought a new Savage. I have owned a number of 99s and two 340s plus a 170. Other than the 340s, I've never bought Savage bolt gun.

. No that was just something I'd read randomly somewhere when I was starting to handload for the SKS. I wasn't reloading for the mini so I didn't look any further into it.

Okay, thanks!

Annealed my brass this morning and getting ready to start loading my TLC311-165-RF sized at .310". The Lee Pacesetter 7.62x39 die set includes a .308 (.307") and a .311 (.310") expander. I actually purchased the .310" expander for my 30-30 die sets because it does a great job of prepping the case neck for a .310 or .311 cast bullet. Absolutely no need for any other expansion.

What do you think will be the wait time on that bullet mold? Any chance to get in on that for a group buy?

No plans for a group buy at this time Bob. More on the just thinking stage. I have had four group buys in the works since May and until they are completed, I will not be adding anymore. I might talk with NOE about the design. I'm still not quite happy with the details and need more info on the CZ527 & Ruger M77 before I commit.

Deer season starts on Saturday and I get and keep real busy for at least 60 days with family, friends, and my hunting. Sometime in that period I will have have enough experience with the cartridge to make a call on the design. May be Lee will catch up by then :P
