Being new on here I may have missed it but was surprised not seeing it mentioned yet. I remember discussions on it back in the days of DOS. Set it on the rim to preheat, etc. Some of us even added little shelves to the pot. My moulds were Lyman then as I didn't do well with the AL ones.

In these days of thermocouples (TC's) I measured that shelf temperature and it was well below what I set the PID on my hotplate at. Now first bullets out are good, whether from AL or steel moulds.
